Dr. E.C Fulcher JR Shares Core Responsibilities of a Senior Pastor

“With a big position comes big responsibility”, this fact is true in cases of Senior pastors. Churches have different styles of ministry that determine the role and responsibility attached to the senior pastor. But there are numerous factors that determine it, like the location, talent, and personality. Moreover, churches do grow or diminish in size, the role of a senior pastor tends to change along with that.

Preaching for more than 50 years, Dr. E.C Fulcher JR shares his insight on the role and responsibility of a senior pastor.

  • Shape the Culture:

Building and maintaining the culture of the church comes under the primary responsibility of a senior pastor. The culture determines who you are, what values you provide, and the way you get things done.

A senior pastor must determine if the culture is healthy or toxic. Do people have faith and a positive attitude towards culture, or are they inward, shifting, or unclear. The culture of a church is more crucial and powerful than vision, staff, resources, and program.

  • Communicate Biblical Truth:

The pastor engages supernatural powers while speaking the word of God, this could be life-saving and life-changing. The level of preparation, passion, and connection with people weighs more than the style of communication. If you are gifted and a strong communicator, it’s a bonus.

In case your communication game is not that strong, you must choose to go shorter rather than longer.

  • Display Clear Vision

Having a strong and clear vision is essential to lead the people forward. A certain sense of direction is essential to carry on the momentum. A pastor must be able to answer the following question:

  • Where do you want to go?
  • How will you achieve that?

It’s acceptable to not have all the answers yet a pastor must be aware of the next step to be taken. The vision must be discussed with the people one on one or in small groups of people.

  • Develop Leaders

It becomes hard for a pastor alone to carry out the vision God has given him. So a pastor must be able to develop new leaders to help him carry out the vision.

If you don’t have a specific plan to build leaders, here are a few solid and tested tips by Truth House Ministry Church Inc

  • Gather a group – Choose five to seven people who could be your potential leaders, staff or both at a time.
  • Select a book – Choose among the best leadership books, meet your leader group once in a month to discuss the learnings.
  • Ask them two questions – What are they learning and how are they applying it practically.
  • Connect with the Community

Connecting with community people could be time-consuming, but this doesn’t have to be your daily tasks or even weekly tasks, a few hours a month can get this done effectively.

You can either choose personal evangelism or just meeting with the important leaders, all these cumulative efforts of yours would have good long-term results.

Dr. E C Fulcher had completed his doctorate from United Christian Bible Institute, Cleveland. He has started preaching at the early age of 17. He was awarded as the “Defender of Animal Rights Award” in 2002 & 2005. Writing, restoring old cars, and writing songs are some of the things he likes to do.

  1. Great post. Articles that have meaningful and insightful comments are more enjoyable, at least to me.
It is interesting to read what other people thought and how it relates to their clients,
as their view could possibly assist you later on.
    Best regards,
